Where exactly is Sölveig?

Sölveig is on a family parcel on the Amnicon River in South Range, Wisconsin. We're a 30-minute drive from Duluth, Minnesota, 40 minutes from the Minnesota North Shore (Two Harbors, Gooseberry Falls), about an hour from Bayfield and the Apostle Islands, and just 1/4 mile from the southern shore of Lake Superior at the mouth of the Amnicon River. For privacy, the exact street address is shared with guests after booking.

What's the difference between Sölveig Stay and Sölveig Sentō?

Sölveig Stay is a 480-square-foot converted shipping container cabin with a cedar IKI Nordic sauna, outdoor stock-tank cold plunge, king Nectar bed, indoor and outdoor kitchen, Solo Stove fire pit, and bikes to the beach. Starting at $195/night. Sölveig Sentō is a restored century-old hunting shack reimagined as a private Japanese sentō (銭湯) bathhouse — IKI sauna, ColdLife cold plunge, two-person copper rain shower, deep soaking tub, king bed, gourmet kitchen, and a relaxation lounge. Starting at $245/night. Both sleep two.

Do both properties have a sauna?

Yes — every Sölveig property includes a private, on-property cedar IKI Finnish sauna. The Stay sauna's stove is Wi-Fi-enabled so we can preheat it before you arrive. Sentō's IKI is set in tiered cedar benches with a window onto the birch forest.

Is there a cold plunge?

Yes — both properties. Sölveig Stay has an outdoor stock-tank cold plunge on the patio. Sölveig Sentō has a commercial-grade ColdLife cold plunge that holds a steady temperature year-round.

How many guests can each property accommodate?

Two guests, maximum, at each property. Both Sölveig Stay and Sölveig Sentō are purpose-built for couples / two-person stays — one king bed each, no fold-out sleeping options.

Are children allowed?

The two-guest maximum applies regardless of age — these spaces are sized and designed for two people. If you're considering a stay with a child, please contact us first to discuss.

Are pets allowed?

No pets at either property.

Why book direct instead of on Airbnb?

When you book on solveig.space, you skip Airbnb's guest service fee — typically 14% to 20% of the booking subtotal. The cabin, the cleaning, the amenities, and the hosts are exactly the same. The only thing that changes is the middleman. We use Hospitable for booking and Stripe for secure payment.

How far in advance should I book?

Sölveig fills up first on weekends, holidays, and through the prime sauna season (late September through April). For weekend stays in winter, we suggest booking 4–8 weeks ahead. Midweek and shoulder-season availability is often open closer in.

What's the minimum stay?

Two nights at both properties.

When is check-in and check-out?

Check-in is at 4:00 PM. Check-out is at 11:00 AM. Early arrival or late departure is sometimes available — message us before your stay to ask.

Can I rent both properties at the same time?

Yes. Stay and Sentō sit about a quarter-mile apart on the same family land. Groups of four (two couples, two families, etc.) regularly rent both at once. Direct-message us if you'd like help coordinating availability across both.

Is the WiFi good enough to work remotely?

Yes. Both properties run on Starlink high-speed satellite internet — fast enough for video calls, streaming, and large file uploads.

Are the properties wheelchair accessible?

Sölveig Stay is a converted shipping container with limited accessibility (entry step, compact layout). Sentō has a heated foundation with step access. Neither was built to formal ADA standards. If you have specific access needs, message us before booking and we'll be honest about what's workable.

What's the cancellation policy?

Direct bookings use a flexible cancellation window — full refund if you cancel at least 30 days before check-in. Current details are surfaced during checkout via Hospitable.

Is there a hot tub?

Sentō has a deep soaking tub indoors (Japanese-bath tradition). Stay does not have a hot tub — but it does have the cedar sauna and outdoor cold plunge, which together provide the same heat-then-cool ritual.

Do you provide towels, robes, and toiletries?

Yes — both properties stock bathrobes, towels, washcloths, sauna gear (ladle, bucket, thermometer), and starter toiletries. Bring your bathing suit if you want one for the cold plunge.

What's the weather like? Best season to visit?

Each season has its own argument. Winter (December through March) is the strongest sauna season — deep snow, cold dark mornings, fires going. Summer (June through August) is for the beach, Bayfield blueberry picking, and long sunset walks. Fall (September through October) is foliage, quiet trails, and shoulder-season pricing. Spring (April through May) is the briefest and the wettest, with mud on the trails but excellent rates.

Where should we eat while we're here?

In Duluth: Duluth Grill (breakfast/lunch), Northern Waters Smokehaus (smoked fish), OMC, Cork Town, New Scenic Cafe, Va Bene, Duluth's Best Bread. In Superior, WI: Wissota Chophouse, Thirsty Pagan Brewery, Earth Rider Brewery. Out-of-the-way favorite: Delta Diner in Iron River, WI. Full area guide on the Experience page.

Is there a fire pit?

Sölveig Stay has an outdoor Solo Stove fire pit on the patio. Sentō does not have a fire pit, but the soaking tub and IKI sauna are the equivalent slow-burn evening.

Can I host an event, photo shoot, or wedding here?

Sölveig is not licensed for events. The two-guest maximum is enforced. For small commercial photography or video, contact us directly — we sometimes allow it with prior arrangement and an additional fee.

Who built and runs Sölveig?

Sölveig is family-owned and family-run. Jeff and Heidi Larson own the land in South Range, Wisconsin. Their daughter Sophia McCann and son-in-law Matthew McCann manage the properties. Jeff is also a professional oil painter (jeffreytlarson.com) — his original paintings hang in both Stay and Sentō.
